We Remember - 10th November 2017

All this week pupils and staff at Barford have been involved in many activities regarding Remembrance Day.

The School council have been creating poppy inspired posters for each class in the School.

Next Mrs Janagal had everychild in everyclass add their fingerprint to make the petals of the poppy. The nursery children had their handprint taken and their names written on their handprint, which would form the stamen of the poppy. The Remembrance display can been seen in the main hall.

At 11am on Friday 10th November pupils observed the one minute silence in the playground.

We would like to say a big thank you for all the donations made to the poppy appeal. We raised £368.90 for our charity non-uniform day; we will update parents when we receive our grand total.

A big thank you to Parents/Carers, Pupils and Staff for their donations!

Red Sun Spotted at Playtime - 16th October 2017

During playtime pupils and staff saw a very strange sight in the sky, the colour of Sun was red. Speculation grew by pupils as to why the Sun’s colour changed from yellow to red. Some pupils thought the Sun changed colour because Diwali is here. Other pupils thought it was the end of the world.

Below is the scientific explanation as to why the Sun appeared to change its colour to red.

BBC weather presenter Simon King said it was due to the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia dragging in tropical air and dust from the Sahara.

He added that debris from forest fires in Portugal and Spain was also playing a part.

The dust has caused shorter wavelength blue light to be scattered, making it appear red.

Mr King said: "Ophelia originated in the Azores where it was a hurricane and as it tracked its way northwards it dragged in tropical air from the Sahara."

This meant dust from the Sahara was brought with it, he said.

"The dust gets picked up into the air and goes high up into the atmosphere, and that dust has been dragged high up in the atmosphere above the UK," Mr King explained.

The particles in the air cause blue light to scatter, leaving longer-wavelength red light to shine through.

Thanks to Hurricane Ophelia and some dust from the Sahara desert, the Sun changed it's colour from yellow to red.

Photos of the Red Sun can be seen below.

Jeans for Genes - 22nd September 2017

This year Barford’s chosen charity was Jeans for Genes. Every pupil and staff member at Barford wore Jeans to show their support and donated £1 to this fantastic charity.

To raise extra funds for Jeans for Genes, Mrs Janagal and the School Council had several pupils from Reception to Year 6 play a game. Pupils had to throw as many 1p and 2p coins into the different colour hoops. The pupil would then earn house points for each coin that landed in the hoops:-

  • Orange hoop – 2 house points
  • Blue hoop – 10 house points
  • Red hoop – 5 house points

As a special bonus if a pupil’s coin landed on the blue star sticker then the pupil would get a special prize!

A big thank you to Parents, Carers, pupils and staff for donating their money to help a wonderful cause.

A big thank you to Mrs Janagal and the School Council for running the 1p 2p throwing game and organising the Jeans for Genes day at Barford.

Photos of the 1p 2p throwing game can be seen below.
