Children as Leaders
At Barford Primary School, pupil leadership plays an important part in our day-to-day school life.
Children are given the opportunity to be involved in the wider school life, make decisions about projects they would like to run and provide support for other children in the school.
Our pupils have the opportunity to take on leaderships roles as:
- School Councillors
- Zone Managers
- Well-being Team
- Well-Being Ambassadors
- Learning Buddies
- Eco Council – coming soon !
The School Council is made up of elected pupils from Year 2 to Year 6. The School Council meets every 2 weeks and has an agenda. Each Councillor shares the minutes with the rest of their class and feeds back to the School Council. The School Council is run by Miss Wright from the Inclusion Team.
The types of issues on the agenda inlcude: school meals, (school council members have regular tasting sessions); the school grounds; anti-bullying, assemblies and collective worship; the school building and grounds; exciting lessons and any other issues that the pupils bring to the meetings.
Other people are invited to the meeting, for example the Head Teacher, the School Chef, the Building Site Supervisor and the Local Community Police.
The School Council has democratic votes and learn many citizenship skills through their attendance. It is a very positive aspect of Barford Primary School's life and supports the inclusive ethos at Barford.
Well-being Team
Helping our children to develop ways to access to mental health and wellbeing support is very important to us.
Our Well-being Team and Well-being Ambassadors are there to help support their peers by:
- developing their self confidence
- reducing any barriers
- encouraging self-help
- developing belonging
- positive ways to manage feelings
They will also provide peer support such as informal mentoring and buddying up.
At lunchtime, our zone managers run all of the activities on the playground. They make sure all the equipment is there ready to use, help children play the games and make sure that everything runs smoothly. They even have stickers that they can give out to other children if they see great lunchtime behaviours.
Learning Buddies
Our children are amazing role models for each other. Children from the older year groups will often support children
from Key Stage 1 with thier learning. They will take time out of their lunchtime to listen to them read and give them lots of positive encouragement. The older children fill in a comment in their reading diary and give them a sticker for doing so well.
