Intent

At Barford Primary School, our mathematics curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and designed to develop confident, resilient mathematicians. We believe that every child can succeed in mathematics through high-quality teaching, carefully sequenced learning and high expectations for all, regardless of their starting point. Our curriculum develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, enabling pupils to apply their mathematical knowledge with confidence in a range of meaningful contexts.

We believe that mathematical success relies not only on secure procedural knowledge but also on the confident use of mathematical language, enabling pupils to explain, justify and communicate their reasoning with precision. By making rich links across mathematical concepts and providing opportunities to revisit and deepen learning, we ensure pupils build secure foundations for future education and everyday life.

 

Implementation

Our mathematics curriculum follows a carefully structured progression that builds knowledge and skills over time. Lessons are designed to develop conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency, ensuring pupils understand not only how to calculate but why methods work. Through skilful questioning, mathematical discussion, practical resources and varied representations, pupils are encouraged to reason, explain and solve increasingly complex problems.

Developing mathematical language is central to our approach. Every lesson introduces and revisits Star Words – carefully selected mathematical vocabulary that pupils are explicitly taught, encouraged to use accurately in discussion and writing, and revisit throughout their learning. This consistent focus on vocabulary enables children to articulate their mathematical thinking with confidence and precision.

To support all learners, every classroom is equipped with Maths Baskets on each table. These contain a range of manipulatives and practical resources, such as place value counters, Base Ten, Numicon, bead strings, counters, tens frames and number lines, allowing pupils to independently select the resources they need to represent concepts, explore ideas and deepen their understanding. By embedding the use of concrete resources throughout the school, pupils develop secure conceptual understanding before progressing to pictorial and abstract representations.

Learning is adapted to meet the needs of all pupils while maintaining consistently high expectations. Teachers use ongoing assessment to identify misconceptions, provide timely intervention and ensure every child is appropriately supported and challenged. Through regular retrieval practice, careful modelling and purposeful questioning, pupils make strong progress and develop confidence as successful mathematicians.

 

Impact

By the time pupils leave Barford Primary School, they are confident, resilient mathematicians who can calculate accurately, reason logically and solve problems independently. They develop curiosity, perseverance and a positive attitude towards mathematics, recognising its importance both within school and in everyday life. Maths Meetings

Maths Meetings are an important part of daily life at Barford Primary School. These short, focused sessions, lasting between 10 and 15 minutes each day, take place separately from the main mathematics lesson and are designed to strengthen pupils' fluency, confidence and long-term retention of mathematical knowledge.

During Maths Meetings, pupils revisit previously taught concepts, practise key number facts and develop rapid recall of essential skills. Sessions also focus on practical everyday mathematics, helping children apply their learning to real-life situations through activities involving time, money, measures, calendars, statistics and other mathematical knowledge that supports everyday decision-making.

Key mathematical vocabulary is continually revisited through Star Words, ensuring pupils repeatedly encounter and confidently use the language needed to explain and justify their reasoning. This regular retrieval of both knowledge and vocabulary helps pupils make connections across the curriculum, address misconceptions quickly and prepares them for new learning.

By revisiting learning little and often, Maths Meetings strengthen pupils' understanding, improve fluency and ensure mathematical knowledge is retained over time.

At Barford Primary School, we believe mathematics should be experienced beyond the classroom, inspiring pupils to recognise its relevance and importance in the wider world.

Our enrichment opportunities include:

  • Minecraft Education, where pupils apply mathematical thinking through coding, spatial reasoning, logical thinking and collaborative problem-solving as part of our extracurricular provision.
  • Financial literacy, providing pupils with meaningful opportunities to develop practical skills involving money, budgeting, saving and making informed financial decisions.
  • Real-life mathematical experiences, where pupils apply their learning in authentic contexts through visits to places such as the Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum, exploring mathematics through science, engineering and technology.
  • National Number Day, where the whole school celebrates mathematics through engaging investigations, competitions, practical challenges and collaborative activities that promote enjoyment and confidence in the subject.

These opportunities encourage pupils to see mathematics as an exciting, purposeful and essential part of everyday life while developing resilience, curiosity and a lifelong appreciation of the subject.

Curriculum End Goals

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – Early Learning Goals

By the end of Reception, children will achieve the Early Learning Goals by developing a secure understanding of number and numerical patterns. They will confidently count, compare quantities, automatically recall number bonds, recognise patterns and solve simple mathematical problems using practical resources and everyday contexts. Children leave the Early Years with the confidence and mathematical foundations needed for Key Stage 1.

 

Key Stage 1

By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils will become fluent in number and calculation, confidently using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies. They will recognise, find and describe fractions, measure and compare length, mass, capacity and time, identify properties of shape, interpret simple statistics and solve a range of mathematical problems. Pupils will explain their reasoning using accurate mathematical vocabulary and develop confidence in applying mathematics across different contexts.

 

Key Stage 2

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will demonstrate fluency across all areas of mathematics, including place value, calculation, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics. They will reason mathematically, justify their thinking using precise mathematical language and solve increasingly complex multi-step problems with confidence and resilience. Pupils leave Barford Primary School equipped with the mathematical knowledge, skills and confidence needed for secondary education and the wider world, understanding the value of mathematics in everyday life, future learning and employment.
