School Meals

Children in  Reception, Year 1 and Year 2  are all entitled to a free hot meal under the Government's Universal Infant Free School Meal Scheme.  However, they can choose to bring in their own packed lunch if preferred.

Children should bring their packed lunch in a plastic box and their own drinks in non-breakable containers, but we ask you to avoid sending sweet, sticky or fizzy drinks.

Your child may also be entitled to free school meals if you are in receipt of certain benefits.  If you think you may be entitled, please contact the school office for further information.  We will check your entitlement via Birmingham City Council.

The relevant support payments are:

  • Income Support/Employment Support Allowance
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance (please note this must be Income Based not just Job Seekers)
  • Support under the Immigration & Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit provided that Working Tax Credit is not included and that the “annual income for Tax Credit purposes” is within the guidelines set for the financial year (£16,385 from 1.4.20).  If you are in paid employment and/or in receipt of Working Tax Credit, it is unlikely that you will be entitled to free meals.
  • The ‘Guarantee’ element of State Pension Credit

Why Nutritional Food Matters

A healthy, balanced diet plays a vital role in a child’s development. Nutritious school meals help to:

• Improve concentration and learning outcomes

• Support physical growth and immune health

• Encourage positive eating habits from an early age

CityServe serves meals that are made using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and reducing food waste. Vegetarian options and dietary requirements are also catered for, ensuring inclusivity for all pupils.

Allergy and Dietary Information

Cityserve takes food allergies and special dietary needs very seriously. All meals are prepared in accordance with strict food safety standards, and allergen information is clearly labelled and available for every dish. If your child has a food allergy, intolerance, or specific dietary requirement, please inform the school office as soon as possible so that appropriate arrangements can be made.  Parents are encouraged to speak with the catering team if they have any concerns. Our goal is to ensure that every child can enjoy their meals safely and confidently.

We encourage all families to explore the benefits of school meals and to speak with us if you have any questions or specific dietary concerns. Together, we can ensure that every child enjoys a healthy, happy lunchtime experience.
